According to puranas,Lord Shiva is the supreme power of this world.He is the past tense, He is the present and He is the future,he is everywhere and he is infinite.he is Lord Shiva.He has taken many incarnations to kill the demons and for the salvation of the people.But in this incarnation he killed the sons of Lord Vishnu.We know this Avatar of Lord Shiva as Vrishabha Avatar.Vrishabha means "ox "or "bull".
STORY OF VRISHABHA AVATAR:
During the churning of the ocean, everybody eyes was on the nectar urn( pot of Amrit ). Because whoever drinks the nectar, he will become immortal. Somehow it had to be saved from the demons.
If the demons drank the nectar, they would have become immortal and the whole world would be in chaos. The condition of the universe would have happened, which no one can even imagine. Somehow the demons had to be driven away from it. In such a situation, the gods made a solution for this.
Lord Shiva manifested many Apsaras (celestial nymphs ). These Apsaras started fascinating these demons. These demons got busy admiring the beauty of these Apsaras. They caught these Apsaras and reached Hades ( patal lok ) with these nymphs.
There they imprisoned them. After this the demons came to the attention of the churning of the ocean. They returned there again as they wNt to drink nectar at any cost.
When they reached there, they came to know that the gods had consumed all the nectar. There's nothing left now. The demons got very angry with this. The demons said that now they will fight.
A big war started between the gods and the demons. This war lasted for several days. The gods had drunk the nectar so they ( gods ) become immortal. In such a situation, it was no longer possible for the demons to defeat the gods. Ultimately the gods prevailed in the battle and demons have no choice except to accept theur defeat.
The demons now had to save their lives in some way. The demons started running towards Hades. Lord Vishnu now ran after these demons to kill them. While chasing the demons, he also reached Hades. There Lord Vishnu killed all the demons.
There Lord Vishnu saw the Apsaras imprisoned. He got these Apsaras free. Seeing Lord Vishnu, these Apsaras were fascinated by him. The thought of making Lord Vishnu their life partner came in the mind of Apsaras.They prayed to Lord Shiva. They asked Lord Shiva to grant them a boon to get Lord Vishnu as there husband.
Lord Shiva asked Lord Vishnu to marry these Apsaras. At the same time, he also asked him to stay in the 'Patal Lok'. In this way Lord Vishnu started living there and started living a married life. He had many sons from these Apsaras. However, these sons were not at all like the gods.
They were behaving just like demons. The sons of Lord Vishnu had now created terror in all the three worlds. There didn't seem to be any solution now. In such a situation, the deities or gods had reached Lord Shiva and they asked Lord Shiva for help.
To save all three worlds from terror of Lord Vishnu's evil sons,Lord Shiva had taken the incarnation( avatar ) of Vrishabha. Taking the form of a bull, he reached to destroy the sons of Vishnu. He killed all the sons of Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu got very angry with this.Their was a war between Lord Shiva in form of Vrishabha and Lord Vishnu which continued for several days. Ultimately it did not yield any result.
The Apsaras then prayed to Lord Shiva and asked him to release the boon to Lord Vishnu. After this Lord Vishnu realized the truth.When Lord Shiva asked him to return to Vishnu Lok or Vaikuntha.
In this way Lord Shiva saved all the three worlds from the terror of evil son's of Lord Vishnu.
