 Lord Shiva, god of gods, took many avatars always to test someone or to teach them the right path for their mistake they have done .It is also considered as that there are 19 avatars of Lord Shiva and out of which one of the avatar of Lord Shiva was  Avadhut avatar. Lord Shiva had taken this avatar to free Devraj Indra from his ego or arrogance.

STORY OF AVADHUT AVATAR :

     So the story of Avadhut avatar of Lord Shiva is as follows.Once, Devraj Indra  who was the king of heaven and the god of lightning.Devraj Indra was proud of being the king of his gods and being powerful.

   Devraj Indra was going to Kailash ( adobe of Lord Shiva ) to have darshan of Lord Shiva with Agni Dev Vayu Dev,Surya Dev,Varun Dev and other gods and Guru Brihaspati ( Guru of the Gods).

     Lord Shiva is Antaryami,he knows all everythinfg about the past, the present and the future and he had seen Devraj Indra coming with all the gods with his power.So Lord Shiva took the Avadhoot avatar to show Devraj indra the right path and he should give up his ego.

      Lord Shiva disguised as an Aghori sanyasi and laid  down in the path of Devraj Indra and all other gods.Seeing Avadhoot lying in his path, Devraj Indra got anngry and he disobeyed him in his arrogance of his power. Devraj Indra disrespectfully asked him to move away from the path.But the Avadhoot keeps on ignoring Indra's words and kept laying on the ground.

  Devraj Indra said to Avadhut that ,"You do not know me, I am the king of gods and the heaven,Indra.I am the most powerful.You get up from my way and rise up and bow down to me as I am the king of gods".

   Seeing Devraj Indra crushed in his ego, Lord Shiva got very angry.And he told Indra that,"Why should I bow before you? I believe in Lord Shiva, not in you".

   Devraj Indra got more angry with the answer of Lord Shiva who incarnated as Avadhut .He called Avadhut a fool and crushed in his ego Devraj again asked to worship himself and told to get out of the way as he want to greet Lord Shiva.

   Avadhut in his anger told ,"Devraj that if you want to have darshan of Lord Shiva, then do his penance first, then only you can have darshan of Lord Shiva".

  Hearing all this, Devraj Indra felt insulted and invoked his Vajra to attack Avadhut.As soon as Devraj used Vajra to kill Avadhut, Devraj's hand stopped in the air.

       Devraj still did not recognized Lord Shiva in his ego and said that , "You fool, you cannot stop me from your illusion, I am king of gods".

      Seeing all this, Devraj still has great ego on himself, Lord Shiva's anger knows no bounds and he opened his third eye to consume Devraj.

   Guru Brihaspati and all other gods recognized Lord Shiva and started praising him.Devraj Indra also apologized to Lord Shiva as soon as he opened the third eye and started asking him for forgiveness of his mistake.

 Lord Shiva would have been pleased to see all the gods praising him and being pleased he forgive Devraj IndraLord Shiva was pleased to see all the gods praising him and being pleased he forgive Devraj Indra.

    And Lord Shiva asked Devraj to leave his ego and do good to his subjects.In this way Lord Shiva destroyed the ego of Devraj Indra.
