He is described as youthful powerful man bearing vel ( name of his spear )in one hand and often riding a peacock. Vel was given by Devi Parvati to him. In most of the stories, Lord Kartikeya is described with a one head but in the story of his birth he is described with six heads.

Lord Kartikeya is known by many names :Murugan, Subrahmanya, Kumara, Skanda, Saravana, Arumugan, Devasenapati. He is the commander of Gods who leads all the battles for Gods against evil.
Lord Kartikeya stories vary in different different forms. For example, In some stories he is described as the big brother of Lord Ganesha and in some places he is considered as the younger than Lord Ganesha.
BIRTH OF LORD KARTIKEYA & END OF DEMON TARKASURA:
According to Legends, there was a powerful Asura whose name was Tarakasura. He did penance of Lord Shiva and got the boon that he will not killed by anyone other Son of Lord Shiva. He was clever he knew very well that Lord Shiva is Hermit, he will not marry anyone. And when there was no marriage where would be son of Lord Shiva will come. Lord Shiva granted him the boon.

Tarkasura considered that he is invincible and immortal, no one can kill him . So he started terrifying the sages and peoples who worships the gods and also defeated the gods in the battles.
Terrified from him gods went to Lord Vishnu seeking for his help. Lord Vishnu told them that Devi Aadishakti has taken birth in form of Devi Parvati in house of Parvatraj Himavat and Devi Menavati, she will marry Lord Shiva and there son will kill Tarkasura.

And it happened as Lord Vishnu told the gods about them. Lord Kartikeya was born and he was trained by Lord Shiva himself in art of warfare. He became commander of Gods and in battle between Gods & Demons. Lord Kartikeya killed Tarkasura and relieved all world from the terror of Demon Tarkasura.
BATTLE BETWEEN LORD KARTIKEYA & DEMON SURAPADAM :
According to Legends in Skanda Puran, there was a demon whose name was Surapadman did severe penance of Lord Shiva and got the boon to live in 108 yugas. He considered himself invincible and started destroying Gods army and made them to fled to earth.

Lord Kartikeya gave him warning to retreat the world where he came from but it does not happened. So Kartikeya declared war against Surapadam. Lord Kartikeya along with other Gods killed sons of Demon Surapadam and army of him.
In fear Surapadam ran away from the war and took form of a mango tree. Lord Kartikeya with his spear teared the tree into two parts. From that parts one peacock is appeared which Lord Kartikeya made his mount and from other part a rooster is appeared which became emblem of his flag.

Another version of this story states that when Lord Kartikeya killed all sons of Demon Surapadam , he asked for the forgiveness from Lord Kartikeya and became the mount of him in form of a peacock.
