Vamana Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is saviour and nurturer of this world.Whenever evil raised its head,Lord vishnu has taken incarnation to save the world from that evil.Out of the 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu , Vamana was the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu and Vamana is a sanskrit word which means "dwarf". This avatar was taken by Lord Vishnu to save gods( devas) from the tyranny of Asura bali or Mahabali.

STORY OF VAMANA AVATAR:
Maha Bali was grandson of the Prahalad( who was great devotee of lord vishnu ) .Mahabali was son of Virochana(Father) and Devamba( Mother ). King Mahabali is also popularly called as Maveli and Onathappan in kerela. He was the lord of immense powers but righteous in his life. He was never behind in doing charity. His biggest drawback was that he was proud of his powers and considered himself equal to God and he was a staunch opponent of the gods.
Shukracharya( guru of demons ) organizes a yajna for King Bali and receives divine chariot, arrows, impenetrable armor from the fire, this increases the power of the Asuras and the Asura army starts attacking Amaravati. In this battle the gods lost the battle to the demon Bali.
After this, Indra, the king of the gods, reached the shelter of Lord Vishnu. After which Lord Vishnu assures to protect the gods and Lord Vishnu promises to be born from the womb of Mother Aditi in the form of Vamana. Then, on the day of Dwadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month, Vishnu appears from Aditi's womb and takes the form of brahmin-celibate.
Maharishi Kashyap performs his Upanayana ceremony along with the sages. Vamana was given Yagyopaveet by Maharishi Pulah, Agastya gave deer skin, Angiras gave clothes, Surya gave umbrellas, Bhrigu wore clothes, Guru Dev Janeu and Kamandal, Aditi gave Kopin, Saraswati gave Rudraksha beads and Kubera gave alms. After this, Lord Vamana goes to Bali after taking permission from his father where King Bali was performing the last Ashwamedha Yagya. After this, Lord Vishnu changes his disguise and comes to King Bali's place to beg for alms.

In the form of Vamana, Lord Vishnu asks Bali for three steps of land in alms. King Bali said that," O Brahmin, you are asking for 3 steps of land from me, I am ashamed to give it, please ask for something bigger or more i will be very happy".But Lord Vaman again asked for only 3 steps of land.
But Shukracharya recognized Lord Vishnu in form of vamana with his divine vision and he forbade King Bali to give anything to that Brahmin.But King Bali ignored them and promised to give 3 steps of land to Vamana.But Vaman said that," O king, you will have to take a pledge that you will donate me a step land".
King Bali laughed and agreed to that matter and as Lord Vaman lowered his kamandal to take a resolution.That's when Shukracharya, on the strength of his powers,from where comes out water in that kamandal and sat silently in that area of kamandal.
But Lord Vishnu understood that Shukracharya is sitting silently inside the kamandal.So Vamana took a straw from the ground and put in that kamandala, due to which Shukracharya's eye burst and due to pain he disappeared from the kamandal.
After taking pledge King Bali, sticking to his word, donated three steps of land to Lord Vishnu. In the form of Vamana, Lord Vishnu measured the heaven in one step and the earth in the second step and the third leg was yet to be laid.
In such a situation, King Bali, fulfilling his promise, puts his head in front of the Lord Vamana and as soon as Vamana keeps the feet , King Bali reaches the patalok(hades). Lord Vishnu is pleased by bali as he had obeyed his promise.
As Lord Vishnu was happy with King Bali,so he made him the King of Hades and also allowed him to return to Earth once every year. After this, Lord Vamana again handed over the heaven to the gods.All gods were happy to get heaven back.

FESTIVAL ON RETURNING OF KING BALI TO EARTH:
As Lord Vishnu had allowed King Bali to return to earth once a year.This homecoming of King Mahabali is celebrated as festival "Onam" in south India.The festival is celebrated in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam. Onam is also a harvest festival.This is a great festival to experience in India as it is full of happiness, excitement, and enjoyment by people of all ages.
